Last time, we made an overview of two main types of bets in roulette — inside and outside. Simply put, inside bets are the ones that you make when you bet on a number or several numbers, while outside bets are everything else. Therefore, let’s make a short review of all the outside bets and how to get the most out of them.
The most important outside bet is Red or Black. All you have to do is select whether the ball would land on a red or a black field. All numbers on a roulette wheel except zero are painted in one of the two colors.
If the ball lands on the color you selected, you get paid. This is a 1:1 bet, meaning you will double your bet amount if your win. For example, if you bet $10, you will get an additional $10 if successful. Red or Black is commonly used as an example whenever we review roulette strategies.
The second type of outside bets is the Odd or Even bet. It is pretty similar to the Red or Black one, as the payment is also 1:1, and it’s also a 50:50 bet.
The only difference is that you’re betting on whether the ball would land on an odd or an even number. Once again, the only time when neither is correct is if the ball lands on zero.
The third bet is 1 to 18 or 19 to 36. It’s also a 50:50 bet, where you get to predict whether the ball would land on the first half of the number board or the second one. For example, if you bet that the ball would land anywhere between 1 and 18 and it lands on 7, you win the bet.
The payout is identical to the previous two bets. Once again, the zero is the bad guy in this bet. It’s the bad guy in all outside bets.
Dozens Bet
The dozens bet is next in line, and it’s actually selecting whether the ball would land on 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36. The payout for this one is 2:1, meaning that if you bet $10 and get it right, you will receive $20 as a reward.
Finally, there’s the columns bet. Simply put, the inner numbers are divided into three columns, and you get to guess which one will contain the winning number. The payment here is also 2:1.
These are the most popular outside bets, and we will explore some of them in future articles. If you’re interested in how to play roulette, make sure to check our guide to learn more.
