Bets Explained: Difference Between Inside and Outside Bets in Roulette

If you play roulette for the first time, you might get slightly confused by the sheer number of options that you can select. Roulette can be confusing for beginners — there’s no doubt about that.

However, it is essentially a very easy game with just a couple of rules. To understand roulette, you need to understand how bets work, and we’re going to explore the roulette table in this and several articles in the future.

The primary division is inside and outside bets. So what’s the difference between the two?

The inside bets are the number bets. Whenever you place your money on a single number from 0 to 36, you’re making an inside bet. The main advantage of inside bets is that they have big payouts.

The payout is 35:1, meaning that if you bet $10 on a single number and the ball hits it, you’re going to get 35x more than that, meaning a total of $350. The bad news is that the odds of that happening are actually 37:1 for American and 36:1 for European roulette.

Therefore, you need to be very lucky to get it right.

Focused On Outside

Whenever we review roulette bankroll management strategies, we mainly focus on outside bets. In them, you don’t bet on a single number, but rather on a combination of numbers.

For example, you can bet on the ball dropping on an even number. Therefore, if the ball drops on any even number, you’ll get paid. However, the payout for that is 1 to 1. In other words, if you bet $10, you’ll get an additional $10, totaling in a $20 payout for your success.

Other such bets that pay 1 to 1 include red/black and low/high (1-18/19-36).

There are outside bets that pay 2 to 1. For example, you can bet on dozens (1-12/13-24/25-36) or columns, as the entire inside bets board is divided into three columns.

This is just the basic division of roulette bets – inside and outside. If you bet on a specific number (or numbers), you’re making an inside bet. Anything other than that is considered an outside bet.

That’s why we are going to focus more on explaining each of them in the future. Therefore, make sure to follow our roulette news section on the site to find out more about this game and how you can improve your chances while playing it.
