Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world, but there are two types of it that are equally popular and that have a couple of different rules. We call these two types of roulette the European and the American roulette. The primary difference between the two is mainly visible in their wheels since the American one has two sockets labeled with a zero (0 and 00). On the other hand, the European version has only one zero socket.
In other words, there are a total of 38 sockets in the American roulette, while the European one has one socket less. If you know how to play roulette, you are probably already aware that the American version’s zeros are located on opposite sides of the roulette, while the red and black sockets are alternating.
So what is the difference between the two wheels? Well, the main difference is the house edge, as the wheel with two zeros will have a higher house edge compared to a wheel with one zero. How so?
The House Edge Impact
Well, both wheels have numbers 1 through 36, and when you guess the numbers right, the price is actually 36x your bet. However, there is that famous zero which adds an additional socket that makes all the difference, creating a house edge of 2.70% for European types of roulette. Since there are two zeros (38 sockets) in the American roulette, the house edge will be bigger, resulting in a total of 5.26% on average.
The European roulette also has a very specific type of bet placement due to the way numbers are distributed. For example, you can place Tiers du Cylindre or Orphelins, which are names for bets that incorporate a certain group of numbers that are located next to each other on the wheel.
Everything else is pretty much the same. The only difference is perhaps in the looks of the wheel itself, but that is not important for the game, so we are not going to cover it. Both versions are equally popular among roulette lovers, and the European one is, naturally, more popular in Europe.
